What are topicals?
Topicals are cannabis extracts that are prepared so they can be applied to the skin in the form of lotions, balms, and oils. Since they are absorbed through the skin, they are non-intoxicating. Topicals offer a smoke-free alternative to inhaling cannabis. They contain cannabinoids, particularly tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD).
How do cannabis infused topicals work?
The cannabis extracts in topical products are absorbed into the skin and bind to a network of cannabinoid receptors called CB2. These CB2 receptors are found throughout the body and are activated by the body’s endocannabinoids or by cannabis compounds known as phytocannabinoids (i.e., THC, CBD). The CBD in topicals typically will not reach the bloodstream because cannabinoids are generally too big to pass through the skin. This means that even if a topical has THC in it, it is non-intoxicating.
Why should I purchase legal topicals?
Buying any cannabis product, including topicals, from the legal market ensures that you are getting the correct amount of THC and CBD content in the product. Cannabis products from the illicit market are unregulated and may contain harmful substances.
What is the maximum THC limit for cannabis topicals?
Current regulations allow for no more than 1,000 mg (or 1 gram) of THC in a topical container.
